I've just upgraded my brothers Mac Pro 5,1 8-core with several items to speed up Final Cut Pro. Mainly SSDs and RAM. The part I thought was going to be the easiest doesn't seem to work at all. I installed a ATI Radeon HD 5870 Mac graphics card upgrade but I don't get any love at all with either Apple screen. The specs say it should be compatible with a mid 2010 or early 2009 MP 5,1. I don't believe there were any discs with this item. I read online that OS 10.6.4 and later should have the drivers already installed. This MP is at 10.6.8.

Another question that comes up... is this 5870 even worth it? The 5770 has the same amount of VRAM. I'm sure there is a speed difference, but is it really enough to justify the hassle for working with Final Cut Studio 3 and Photoshop mainly?
Given that you can order a mac pro with a 5870 you can be sure it is compatible with it. I am one who did order a macpro 5,1 with a 5870. And aside from the fact that the 5000 series cards (not just 5870) probably have the lousiest fans on the planet I have not had any problems with the 5870. But as I sort of alluded to I've gone through two of them and am on my third due to the fans no always working and the cards overheating.
Why doesn't it work? Not sure, unless it is because the 5870 you got was not the apple version of the 5870. That one is properly flashed for macs and has two mini-displayports and an dual link dvi port.
Before we dive into the benchmark session I wanted to talk you through the process of installing a CrossfireX setup. As explained -- any motherboard with two X16 PCIe slots will do. Obviously we are talking about so much horsepower with the new Radeon HD 5870 cards that we do recommend an Intel Core i7 based PC with X58 or P55 motherboard.
One last tip, especially with multi-GPU setups, please make sure you have properly uninstalled old drivers prior to installing the new cards. Typically things never go wrong, but if they do... 99% chance it's related to a residual driver installation.

Following a successful run with the codenamed R700 family of GPUs, which was originally released back in June 2008 as the Radeon HD 4000 series, AMD is launching the highly anticipated R800. Below that we have the 5850 (which we will not be reviewing today), which is a slightly cut-down version of the 5870. Here we have 1440 stream processors divided among 18 SIMDs, 72 texture units, and the same 32 ROPs, with the same 256bit memory bus. The 5850 is clocked at 725Mhz for the core, and 1Ghz for the memory, giving it a maximum compute performance of 2.09 TFLOPS. With the disabled units, load power is slightly reduced to 170W, and it has the same 27W idle power. AMD expects the 5850 to perform at approximately 80% the performance level of the 5870, and is pricing it at $259.
Update: As of 5am EDT, we have seen the availability of 5870s come and go. Newegg had some in stock, but they have since sold out. So indeed AMD did make the hard launch (which we're always glad to see), but it looks like our concerns about a limited supply are proving to be true.

The Radeon HD 5870 is based on ATI's high-end Cypress XT workstation graphics chip that was fabricated on the 40 nm process. The card features one dual-link DVI port and two Mini DisplayPorts. It took up the space of a double-wide PCIe 2.0 x16 slot, and required two auxiliary power cables.[2]
The Radeon HD 5870 required a minimum of Mac OS X 10.6.4 (Snow Leopard). Some Mac Pros required a Snow Leopard Graphics Update for improved stability, which was incorporated into Mac OS X 10.6.5 and later.[3][4][5] The card was supported through macOS 10.13.6 (High Sierra). However, it does not support Metal, and as a result will not work with macOS Mojave (10.14) or later.[6][7]
Due to being backwards compatible with older Mac Pros while being less common than its PC counterpart, the Mac version of the Radeon HD 5870 has maintained higher resale values on the aftermarket. However, power users have found that it is possible to flash the cheaper PC version of a Radeon 5000 series GPU card with the firmware from the Mac version.[8]
