Siemens PLM already has a wealth of knowledge in the field of simulation and analysis with the tools built into NX, the NX Nastran solver and, of course, the legendary pre and post processing application, Femap.
Solid Edge ST5
The updates made in ST5 are good solid improvements. The reworking of the multi-body working methods are ideal and support the way many users want to work, rather than having to work the way the CAD system demands.
As part of my review, I was to get trained by part of the Solid Edge development team at a Siemens office in Waltham Mass. I had already kicked the tires with a demo version of Solid Edge. Siemens PLM Software has a 45-day trial version of Solid Edge downloadable from www.plm.automation.siemens.com/en_us/products/velocity/solidedge/free-solid-edge.shtml?stc=usiia421070. The 2GB download can take some time, but this is better than waiting for a disc to show up in the mail.
The backend of Solid Edge is built on the same Parasolid kernel as SolidWorks, and so performance was good for the brief time I played with. There were just one or two instances of some lag, but otherwise drawings, parts, and assemblies all opened quickly. The display was crisp, rotating a part was straight forward, and I have yet to crash the system entirely.
Solid Edge is a 3D CAD, parametric feature and synchronous technology solid modeling software. It runs on Microsoft Windows and provides solid modeling, assembly modelling and 2D orthographic view functionality for mechanical designers. Through third party applications it has links to many other Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) technologies.
Originally developed and released by Intergraph in 1996 using the ACIS geometric modeling kernel, it changed to using the Parasolid kernel when it was purchased and further developed by UGS Corp in 1998. In 2007, UGS was acquired by the Automation & Drives Division of Siemens AG. UGS company was renamed Siemens Digital Industries Software on October 1, 2007.
The ordered modeling process begins with a base feature controlled by a 2D sketch, which is either a linear, revolved, lofted, or swept extrusion. Each subsequent feature is built on the previous feature. When editing, the model is "rolled back" to the point where the feature was created so that the user cannot try to apply constraints to geometry that does not yet exist. The drawback is that the user does not see how the edit will interact with the subsequent features. This is typically called "history" or "regeneration based" modeling. In both ordered and synchronous mode Solid Edge offers very powerful, easy yet stable modeling in hybrid surface/solid mode, where "Rapid Blue" technology helps the user to create complex shapes in an intuitive and easy way.
The software combines direct modeling with dimension driven design (features and synchronously solving parametrics) under the name "Synchronous Technology".[3] Parametric relationships can be applied directly to the solid features without having to depend on 2D sketch geometry, and common parametric relationships are applied automatically.
Solid Edge is known for being an industrial design product, lending itself very well to the processes surrounding machine manufacturing and sheet metal structure fabrication. It is generally acknowledged to be stable and competitive in the arenas where adoption is the greatest.
Short of Amazon.com, Solid Edge has the best customer satisfaction I have ever found. This ST7 release was proudly hailed in with the acknowledgement that it satisfied over 1300 customer requests. This demonstrates that the company clearly knows its customers are keenly watching their support and end-user commitment.

With the loss, the Cougars fall to 15-32 while the Warriors improve their record to 49-12.Starter Tyson Thompson pitched five innings and gave up four runs, but only two earned, on five hits while striking out five LCSC hitters in the process. Zach Fisher came on in relief for the last four innings and allowed just two hits and struck out three to keep the Warrior offense at bay.In the first inning for the Cougars, right fielder Mike Knight recorded an infield single with one out and later scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Stefan Bailie to give the Cougs a 1-0 lead.Garrett Alwert led off the second with a bloop single to center field, but was caught stealing in the next at-bat to start a streak of 21 consecutive batters retired by Warrior pitchers. Catcher Jon Baeder broke the streak in the ninth inning with a single to first base that saw the ball take a wicked bounce on its way to the edge of the infield, and Knight registered his second hit of the day with another infield single to the shortstop. Bailie grounded into a fielder's choice one batter later to retire Knight and end the game.The next game for the Cougars will be against Southern California Saturday, May 12, in Los Angeles at Dedeaux Field.
